Colossians: Endurance and Patience

These are two traits every Christian desperately needs and Paul prayed for himself and others in Colossians. They are the very traits our culture seems unable to produce... in fact it produces the opposite.

Colossians 1:1-12

  1. Endurance and Patience, in the context of persecution, trials, the spiritual battle and the second coming:
  2. These are qualities we are to desire and get:
  3. Why we need these:
  4. How to get them:
    1. Pray: Colossians 1:11
    2. Know your Hope:
    3. Trials:
    4. The Bible: Romans 15:4-5
    5. Jesus’ example: Hebrews 12:1-4
Sermon discussion topics for parents to use with their children:
  • How were endurance and patience described in the sermon?
  • Why is our culture so bad at helping us develop these traits?
  • Why does the Bible say these are so important?
  • How can we get them?
  • Why are trials so important in all of this?

Mark: Loving Neighbor

We live in what many historians call The Age of Anger. We have become so divided on every issue that both sides are angry with the other. We are very envious of others for what they have compared to us. In Mark, Jesus tells and shows us the importance and the way to love our neighbor.

Luke 10:25-37
1 Corinthians 13:1-8
Mark 12:28-34
Galatians 5:14
Philippians 2:4-7,3:18-19
Nehemiah 9:17
James 1:19-20
Proverbs 16:32

Sermon discussion questions for parents to use with their children:
  • What are the two most important things we are to do in life?
  • What is envy?
  • What is malice?
  • Why do we have so little pity and mercy toward others?
  • How was the Good Samaritan's attitude different that the other travelers?
  • Is it easy for God to love us day by day?
  • Where would we be if God was not full of mercy, slow to anger, and ready to forgive?
  • Why did God give His Son?

The Gospel of the Meantime - From Suffering to Glory

How should we spend the meantime -- the time between the present age and the age to come; between the resurrection of Christ and His second coming; between the suffering and the glory? Paul describes this as a time of eagerly waiting, patiently hoping, and praying.

Romans 8:15-27,5:1-2,8:1,8:11
Matthew 5:11
Psalm 130:5
Titus 2:13
2 Corinthians 4:17

Sermon discussion questions for parents to use with their children:
  • Why does creation groan?
  • Why are many Christian's concept of salvation too small?
  • Why do Christians groan? (3 reasons)
  • How do we explain the Spirit groaning?
  • How are we to wait?
  • How are we to live in this present age, as we wait for salvation to be completed?
  • What is the source of our hope in this age of suffering?

1 Peter: Living as a Christian in a Hostile World

We all dread persecution and suffering... it hurts, discourages and frustrates. Yet the Bible tells us to rejoice and to feel blessed?! How can we do this? Peter gives us solid reasons to help us do this very counter-intuitive thing.
