Embrace and Excel

There are cultural givens (presuppositions the culture holds) that have damaged our views of children, family, and the exalted calling of motherhood. But the Bible can restore us to its givens and restore the family as God has purposed it to be.

Psalm 127-128
Matthew 20:25-28

1 Chronicles 25:5

Sermon discussion topics for parents to use with their children:
  • Describe these cultural givens: Live is primarily about me; children are to help me fulfill myself; children are a liability.
  • Describe these Biblical givens: Life is primarily about serving others; children are a blessing from the Lord; motherhood is an exalted calling.
  • How do the Biblical givens help us understand the role of mothers?
  • What should you do with this Biblical perspective?
  • How should it impact or change your life?

Mark: Children are VIPs and Role Models

In this text in Mark Jesus once again confuses the disciples by His actions and uses the event to teach them about the radical difference between His Kingdom and the world while also revealing stunning and glorious things about the nature of God Himself!

Psalm 113
Philippians 2:5-11
Mark 10:1-16,9:35,9:37,9:31

Sermon discussion questions for parents to use with their children:
  • What does it mean the God is humble?
  • Why is it so unusual, in one sense, that God is humble?
  • Why is it not unusual and makes perfect sense?
  • How did Jesus prove this in the text we studied today?
  • Why are children VIPs and why are they role models?
  • Why do we struggle with child-like faith?

Mark: Servanthood is Greatness

Greatness is defined one way by the world and another way by Jesus in Mark. Are you great? Greatness is being a servant? Are you great?

John 13:1-15
Philippians 2:5-11
Mark 9:30-37

Sermon discussion questions for parents to use with their children:
  • What is greatness to our culture?
  • To Jesus?
  • How does Jesus' teaching here change the way we look at ourselves, at others, the world's view of us?
  • Who do you serve?
  • Who do you not serve but should serve?
  • What does this teaching about servanthood tell us about God Himself?
