Mark: My Heroes Have Always Been... Widows

What is True Religion? Mark contrasts Scribes and a Widow to help us know the real thing.

James 1:21-27
1 Timothy 5:1-16
Mark 12:38-44,11:27,12:28,12:32,12:35
1 Corinthians 11:31,15:58
Matthew 10:42

The scribe was distinguished by his linen robe, a long white mantle reaching to the feet and provided with a long fringe. White linen clothes were regarded as a mark of distinction, so that men of eminence (priests, Levites, scribes) or those who wished to parade their position, wore white and left bright colors to the common people. By the majority of the people the scribes were venerated with unbounded respect and awe. Their words were considered to possess sovereign authority. When a scribe passed by on the street or in the bazaar people rose respectfully. Only tradesmen at their work were exempted from this display of deference. The scribe was greeted with titles of deepest respect: "Rabbi," "Father," "Master," and there is evidence that in the first century A.D. the designation "Rabbi" was undergoing a transition from its former status as a general title of honor to one reserved exclusively for ordained scribes. When the important men of Jerusalem gave a feast they considered it an ornament to the feast to have a distinguished scribe and his pupils there. The highest places were assigned to them, and the scribe was given precedence in honor over the aged, and even over parents. In the synagogues as well the seat of honor was reserved for him; he sat at the front with his back to the chest containing the Torah, in full view of the congregation.William L Lane The Gospel of Mark

1 Peter: Casting Cares on Him

We live in what is called the Age of Anxiety? Why are we so anxious when we have unprecedented wealth, safety, health care, and social nets? God has some very specific and wonderful things to say about how to overcome worry and have not anxiety but the peace that passes understanding.

A Grace Display

God has been planning salvation for a long time. It is designed ultimately to reveal just how rich God is in grace, mercy, and love. He will put the results of the plan on display for all eternity and for all to see. What, or rather who, will that display consist of?

Revelation 7:9-14

Throughout time and eternity the church, this society of pardoned rebels, is designed by God to be the masterpiece of His grace and goodness. F. F. Bruce
So also, throughout eternity the redeemed will be exhibited as the monuments of the marvelous grace of our loving Lord, who drew us from destruction's pit and raised us to heights of heavenly bliss, and did all this at such a cost to Himself that He spared not His own Son, and in such a manner that not a single one of His attributes, not even His justice, was eclipsed. William Hendriksen
Sermon discussion questions for parents to use with their children:
  • Who or what is God going to put on display for ages upon ages?
  • What will this display demonstrate about God?
  • What will it say about the ones on display?
  • Why will it take so long to examine God's riches of grace, mercy, kindness and love?

Luke: Seeing Clearly...Way Too Late

Luke 16:19-31
2 Corinthians 5:10
Revelation 20:12
Ephesians 2:8-9
2 Timothy 3:16-17

We learn, fourthly, from this parable, the reality and eternity of hell. The Lord Jesus tells us plainly, that after death the rich man was "in hell--tormented with fire." He gives us a fearful picture of his longing for a drop of "water to cool his tongue," and of "the gulf" between him and Abraham, which could not be passed. There are few more dreadful passages perhaps in the whole Bible than this. And He from whose lips it came, be it remembered, was one who delighted in mercy! The certainty and endlessness of the future punishment of the wicked, are truths which we must hold fast and never let go. From the day when Satan said to Eve, "You shall not surely die," there never have been lacking men who have denied them. Let us not be deceived. There is a hell for the impenitent, as well as a heaven for believers. There is a wrath to come for all who "obey not the Gospel of Christ." (2 Thessalonians 1:8) From that wrath let us flee betimes to the great hiding-place, Jesus Christ the Lord. If men find themselves "in torment" at last, it will not be because there was no way to escape. J.C. Ryle
