Jesus in Gethsemane, Is There No Other Way?

If God is the great and all-powerful God of the universe then why did He make His only Son suffer and die? That wasn't very nice! Couldn't there have been an easier and better way to save us?

Matthew 26:36-46,1:27
Hebrews 4:15-16,2:17,1:3,10:4
Romans 8:7,1:18,3:24-26
1 Timothy 2:5-6
Acts 4:12
Isaiah 64:6
Colossians 2:23
1 John 4:10
John 13:31-32,6:40

Sermon discussion topics for parents to use with their children:
  • Describe Jesus' circumstances in the text.
  • Explain why He would ask, Is there no other way?
  • The Father said no to the Son for several reasons. What is the Bible's teaching in Hebrews 2:14-18,4:14-16 about why the Father said no?
  • In His garden brokenness, what does Jesus reveal to us about the Father?
  • What parties were at war in the garden of Gethsemane?
  • Who brought an end to the war, and how did He accomplish it?
  • Why couldn't we drink the cup of God's wrath for ourselves?
  • Why could only Jesus drink it, and what did His drinking it accomplish?
  • What was the cosmic contradiction that needed to be set right?
  • How did God set it right?
  • What is the ultimate reason the Father said no?

What If? or What Is?

What if.... there was an infinite, all powerful God who loved you personally and deeply? What is the proof that that What If is in fact a What Is?

1 John 4
Romans 8:31-32
2 Corinthians 9:15

The infinite essential love of God, is, as it were, an infinite and eternal, mutual, holy, energy between the Father and the Son: a pure and holy act, whereby the Deity becomes, as it were, one infinite and unchangeable emotion of love proceeding from both the Father and the Son. This divine love has its seat in the Deity, as it is exercised within the Deity, or in God toward himself.Jonathan Edwards Heaven a World of Love
Sermon discussion topics for parents to use with their children:
  • What was the What If that was outlined in the sermon?
  • Why is that possibly so attractive?
  • What is proof number one that was given?
  • List some of these examples of God's love and goodness to you in your life.
  • What is the Big proof that God loves us according to the passage?
  • Why was/is God's Son so precious to Him?
  • How hard would it be to give a Son?
  • Can this God be trusted?

Appreciating Salvation: Justification

Christians are the most blessed people on earth. We need to appreciate our great salvation. Justification is one of those amazing doctrines that will always thrill our souls!

Deuteronomy 25:1
Proverbs 17:15
Galatians 3:13
2 Corinthians 6:21

Isaiah 61:10

Sermon discussion questions for parents to use with their children:
  • How do we use the phrase To justify?
  • What does it mean when a judge justifies a righteous person?
  • How can God justify the ungodly?
  • Why is God not lying when He declares the sinner free from the guilt of all sin and perfectly righteous?
  • What part does Jesus have in our justification?
  • What part does faith have?
  • Why should this doctrine not make us loose about sin?

Appreciating Salvation: Propitiation

We will more deeply appreciate our salvation when we understand why Jesus is called our propitiation. These important words shed a world of light on how good God has been in providing such a rich salvation.

Romans 1:18,1:32,3:9,3:19,3:21-26,5:9
Genesis 9:5-6
Hebrews 2:17,2:14
1 John 2:1-2,4:9-10
1 Thessalonians 1:10

Sermon discussion questions for parents to use with their children:
  • What does propitiation mean?
  • Why can God not just forgive us of our sin... why did Jesus have to die?
  • How is Jesus our propitiation?
  • What are the implications for us when we sin that Jesus is our propitiation?
  • Why is it important that God sent the propitiation and how does this make the God of the Bible so different than the old Greek gods?

Hebrews: A Great High Priest and the New Covenant

The writer of the book of Hebrews is so excited in chapter 8. He can hardly contain himself because we Christians are so blessed. He opens up in wonderful detail that we have 1.) A Great High Priest and 2.) We are in the New Covenant. Here we will be reminded again of how blessed we really are and thrilled to study how good God has been to us.
