Colossians: Jesus, The Firstborn

In Colossians Paul calls Jesus God's Firstborn. What does that mean? Why could that be a threat to folks? Why is that actually a great blessing, especially to modern humankind today?

  • What does it mean that Jesus is the Firstborn of God?
  • What does it not mean?

How Should I Live: Keeping One Thing Crystal Clear

As we study How Should I Live it is absolutely important that we are clear that salvation is not merited, but a gift! And our response is not a works righteousness but faith working through love and gratitude.

Luke 12:21,18:19

Psalms 146:9,134:3,143:2
Jonah 2:9
Ephesians 2:8-9
Titus 2:14

Sermon discussion topics for parents to use with their children:
  • Who goes to heaven?
  • Who goes to hell?
  • How did Jesus turn the usual answer to these questions upside down?
  • What are the realizations a person must come to in order to be saved?
  • Salvation is a gift, a great gift, and expensive gift, a gift given by grace, a gift received by faith... explain how these were described in the sermon.
  • What is the objective and subjective response to this gift?

Mark: Sins Forgiven... A Big Deal

Jesus delays healing a paralytic while he forgives his sins. That is not what the man wanted... he wanted to walk. What is Jesus teaching here in Mark about what is most important?

Daniel 7:9-14
Mark 1:45-2:12,1:1,1:11

Sermon discussion questions for parents to use with their children:
  • What does it mean that Jesus saw their faith?
  • Why did Jesus not heal the man first and then forgive his sins?
  • How were the scribes sort of right and also very wrong?
  • How do people today want Jesus' blessings but are not really concerned about having their sins forgiven?
  • Why is having our sins forgiven the most important thing?

What Child is This: The King

What child is this? Do we really grasp the significance that this baby was called a King... the King of the world? A few people at the time of Jesus birth did (some for good and some for bad). Their response is a helpful study of the real implications for all people that Jesus is the King.

  • What does it mean when a judge justifies a righteous person?
  • How can God justify the ungodly?
  • Why is God not lying when He declares the sinner free from the guilt of all sin and perfectly righteous?
