2 Corinthians: Defending the Ministry

Concluding 2 Corinthians Paul defends his apostleship against the self-proclaimed for-profit apostles of the region. He stressed his incredible love for the Corinthian church despite their less than enthusiastic love for him in return.

2 Corinthians: My Grace is Sufficient for Thee

2 Corinthians includes Paul's vision of heaven and his thorn in the flesh. We will look at why Paul received this vision, and why Paul's thorn was not removed after much prayer. Often before God will use us in a great way, He will first put us in a position of dependence upon Himself.

2 Corinthians: Job Search

In this part of 2 Corinthians we will see that the Apostle Paul did not just do a job for God, but he demonstrates his deep love and passion for God and His Church and shows us his willingness to take up his cross daily and follow Christ. His example to us should help us see our ministries in and through the church and how we should exhibit these same motives, commitment, and love every day as we serve the same God and Lord Jesus Christ. Do you know what your ministry is? How do you go about that ministry? God never says... just do a job for Me. He is looking just as much at how and why and our attitude as we serve Him.

Mark: He Gave... I Give... A Guided Response

In this summary to the crucifixion we have been studying in Mark, Jesus gave Himself for our sins... when the reality of this grips a person the response is "I give myself to You".

Mark 15:21-47
Galatians 1:3-5,2:20
Titus 2:11-14
2 Corinthians 5:14-15

Sermon discussion topics for parents to use with their children:
  • What does this present evil age mean?
  • What is all involved in the biblical expression He gave Himself for us?
  • What should our response to this be?
  • Give examples of how this works out in a person's life after someone does something sacrificial for them.
  • What are some of the outcomes the Bible says should happen when we grasp the significance of Him giving Himself for our sins?

Who Am I?

Our culture is so self absorbed that the only answer to the question Who am I? leaves us without much hope. Maybe the question should be Whose am I?.

Galatians 2:14-21

Who am I? They often tell me
I stepped from my cell’s confinement
    Calmly, cheerfully, firmly,
Like a Squire from his country house.

Who am I? They often tell me
I used to speak to my warders
    Freely and friendly and clearly,
As thought it were mine to command.

Who am I? They also tell me
I bore the days of misfortune
    Equably, smilingly, proudly,
    like one accustomed to win.

Am I then really that which other men tell of?
Or am I only what I myself know of myself?
Restless and longing and sick, like a bird in a cage,
Struggling for breath, as though hands were compressing my throat,
Yearning for colors, for flowers, for the voices of birds,
Thirsting for words of kindness, for neighborliness,
Tossing in expectations of great events,
Powerlessly trembling for friends at an infinite distance,
Weary and empty at praying, at thinking, at making,
Faint, and ready to say farewell to it all.

Who am I? This or the Other?
Am I one person today and tomorrow another?
Am I both at once? A hypocrite before others,
And before myself a contemptible woebegone weakling?
Or is something within me still like a beaten army
Fleeing in disorder from victory already achieved?

Who am I? They mock me, these lonely questions of mine.
Whoever I am, Thou knowest, O God, I am thine!
    Who Am I? Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Sermon discussion topics for parents to use with their children:
  • In whom do we find our true identity?
  • Why do we need to seek righteousness?
  • What does it mean to be justified through the faithfulness of Christ?
  • What does it mean to be new and loved?
